Who are you?

I'm N.A. Turner (Nick) and I'm a 29 year-old writer.

Where do you live?

I live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in the beautiful, old and quaint Jordaan area with its canals and askew houses.

What’s your home life like?

Right out of University I started a company in the Health industry together with my dad. Now, almost 6 years later we've been acquired, it's time for some new adventures. I've always written on the side, but it wasn't until 1,5 years ago that I finally dared to share my writing. I started www.turnerstories.com and shared one short story every month. Soon after I started a podcast reading my stories, I wrote blog posts sharing my writing journey and I started working on a novel.

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

I mostly write fantasy and science fiction. My short stories are places where reality meets fantasy. I usually describe them as a mix between Black Mirror (the TV show) and fairy tales.

Why did you start writing?

I started writing when I was little. Stories I made up just for me. I quit when I was in high school because I was under the impression I wasn't good enough and that it would be too hard to earn any money with writing.

Years later I picked it up again and I fell in love (again). I aim to get better at the craft and see money as something that might happen but doesn't need to.

One of the main triggers I have to write is subjects I'm interested in, things that go on in the world, human behavior. Ideas never end, fortunately.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I read a lot. Both fiction and non-fiction. I watch a lot of good TV shows and go to the movies. I'm addicted to stories.

However, I have to live my own story too. So I hang out with friends a lot, seek new experiences, travel etc.

Next year I hope to travel for a couple of months and finish my novel in the process.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

Recommendations by friends, or books mentioned in podcasts or by people on social media.

The best thing though is to roam (second hand) bookshops. I always look for one when I'm in a new city.

In Amsterdam, we have a bookshop as big as a department store. 5 floor packed with books. Heaven.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

When I have to "make" myself read it or when my mind starts to wander too often.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Independently for my short stories. Besides putting them on my blog, I've collected them into a paperback version through Amazon.

Who knows, when I finish my novel I might try the traditional route. But sometimes I'm also contemplating a kickstarter like approach.
Picture

How many books/stories have you published so far?

I've published 16 5,000-8,000 word short stories. 13 of them are collected in the aforementioned paperback and Kindle version.
Picture

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

I have just released a new fantasy novella on Amazon. This story serves as an origin story to my novel.

What’s the elevator pitch?

A long, long time ago, at the foot of the mountains of a remote island, Cartius saw colored lights coming from a cave. Guided by his curiosity, he finds seven glimmering gemstones. He returns to his shed with a carving from each and forges a magical ring. Overwhelmed by its power, he decides to create more rings so he can share his abilities for a better world.

We follow Cartius on an adventure throughout all continents in his quest to find fellow Ring Bearers. He finds different cultures and interesting companions on the way. Will he find the right people to build his magical community?

Cartius’s first pupil, Sigurd, grows ever more envious of all the newcomers. Will he accept his fellow Ring Bearers or will he succumb to the trap that lies in having power? Envy brews and tensions rise until an ultimate fight.

How long have you been working on it?

About 2 months in total I think.

When will it be available to buy? Where?

It's available now on Amazon.

How can readers find you?

What inspires you to keep writing?

“Write with the door closed, rewrite with the door open.”"
Stephen King
“Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you?”
Elizabeth Gilbert

Anything you’d like to add?

I like to meet fellow writes and share experiences and tips, so if you want, reach out via one of the socials!

My thanks to Nick for spending some time with us. I wish him the best of success.
