Author Interview with P.G. Sundling

Who are you?

I'm P.G. Sundling, award-winning author of The Internet President: None of the Above. Before I retired to write full time, I worked in software for twenty-four years. Most of my career was working on billion-dollar e-commerce systems for multiple Fortune 500 entertainment companies. I was also a member of a small team that got a PC Magazine Editor's Choice award.

Where do you live?

I was born in L.A. I'll probably die here. Other than a few years in Colorado, I've stuck to my home town like most Americans. My home town is just a little bigger. Well that, and if I decide "To Live and Die in L.A." I've just made a movie reference. :)

What’s your home life like?

Besides spending time with my family, I play a game called Gems of War.

It's like Candy Crush meets Dungeons and Dragons. I snuck in some game references in my book.

Before my daughter was born, every week I used to go watch movies on the studio lot. Walking past those two rows of Oscars was an awesome job perk. In retirement, I can see discount weekday matinees. Movies inspire me.

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

The Internet President: None of the Above blends a dozen genres. It won one award and was a finalist towards another award in the "Cross Genre" category. Stefan Rudnicki, best known for narrating the Ender's Game audiobooks, said, "If anyone has effectively crossed genres, it's you!”

I read everything, but sci-fi is my favorite.

Why did you start writing?

Star Wars inspired me to write and Dungeons and Dragons taught me world-building and gave me an early platform to tell stories.

I've always had to be a writer. It just took me a long time to learn the discipline to finish ideas. Waiting for inspiration is a trap.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

When I go into writing mode, my personal life is on lockdown. I remove distractions and focus on writing. I do twelve-hour writing sessions. It takes about two hours of screwing around with social media or gaming before I'm productive. It's like I have to be pissed at myself for not getting anything done to overcome my internal resistance.

For my first book, I got years behind on the Marvel cinematic universe. Now that I'm retired, I don't have to make as many sacrifices. I'm going to the gym and will allow myself 1-2 movies at an IMAX theater each month.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

Online Book Club and Goodreads.
I also read a lot of books for research, using a Google or Amazon search as a starting point.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

I usually finish books eventually unless they're really boring or amateurish. It's not uncommon for me to put a book on hold for a few years and come back to it. It took me 19 years to get around to finishing Cosmos by Carl Sagan. The friend I borrowed it from didn't think I was going to return it, but I did.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

My ebook and paperback are independently published. The audiobook with two-time Grammy-winner Stefan Rudnicki and his award-winning partner Gabrielle de Cuir was traditionally published via Skyboat Media and distributed through Blackstone.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

I've just finished one novel. Before that, I wrote screenplays.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

I'm still promoting The Internet President: None of the Above, my unconventional debut novel.
I'm about to start work on the sequel, Hot Nights and Cold Wars. It's a political thriller with some science fiction technologies and a huge dose of satire. It will have a lot fewer genres than the first book.
Of course, that includes Amazon:

Hot Nights and Cold Wars is slated to be released in late 2020.

How can readers find you?

There are lots of ways to find me:
Hire a detective.
Hack my phone and track me.
Find something with my scent and release the hounds.

Or maybe social media if that's too much trouble. :)

What inspires you to keep writing?

"We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams."
This line from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory reminds me that we can create magical places with our minds. Our creations start with a dream. I find it easiest to write at night while the world dreams. I'm a big believer in the collective unconsciousness.
"It is better to make constant improvements than try to get something right the first time."
This is a software philosophy that can be applied to many things, including writing. I like to craft and refine my stories, constantly adding little touches along the way.

Anything you’d like to add?

If you read my novel, leave a review so I know what you thought.
I write in a terse cinematic style that feels like you're reading a movie.
I plan to use a lot of unconventional approaches as the None of the Above series escalates. Try something different, check out The Internet President: None of the Above.

My thanks to P.G. for participating in My Laughably Inane Blog and sharing your novel, The Internet President with us. I wish him all the best in his future writing endeavors.
