Who are you?

My name is Ronel Janse van Vuuren and... I’m a Rottweiler pack leader, composting fan, horse servant (my haughty mares look down on my obsessive cleaning of their pasture and stable), folklore enthusiast, people watcher, and author of dark fantasy.

Where do you live?

In dangerous and beautiful South Africa.

What’s your home life like?

Besides obsessively cleaning after my various animals (chickens, horses, Rottweilers), I enjoy gardening (especially composting) and sewing.

There's something meditative about these activities, helping me to relax while running my author empire and raising my Rottweilers.

What genre(s) to you like to write? To read?

I enjoy writing Young Adult Fantasy. I do dabble in Middle Grade and New Adult fantasy too.
Currently, I’m enjoying reading thrillers. Usually I read within the genres I write (Young Adult, Fantasy, Middle Grade, Fairy Tale retellings, etc.), but I’ve been seeing the tropes more than the stories of late, so I’ve decided to take a break and read a genre I like to watch. And it’s been quite inspirational.

Why did you start writing?

The voices in my head told me to... Seriously, though, I enjoy the written word and how events can change people -- which is why I enjoy writing dark fantasy.
Dark fantasy is all about examining the human condition, looking at the consequences of actions and decisions, and how the beliefs we hold can change the way we see our world.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Daydreaming. Reading. Sewing my own take on the patterns I bought. Training my seven month old Rottweiler puppy not to jump and bite when seeking attention. Freelance editing work

I recently got contracted to work on several anthologies by the same publishing company, but I can still be found on Upwork.

Where do you like to go when looking for a new book to read?

Books recommended to me by my Goodreads friends -- they're all on my TBR. I do have a few unread books on my Kindle and on my bookshelves that I can't wait to get to when time allows.

At what point do you call it quits when reading a new book?

If, after the first 50 pages I'm not invested in the plot or characters -- or I just really dislike the story for one reason or another -- I DNF. I usually add the reason clearly in my Goodreads reviews just in case I'm tempted in the future (usually by the same great line that hooked me into reading it in the first place) to read it again.

Are you independently or traditionally published?

Independently. It just sort of happened...

In 2017 there was a publishing competition hosted on the writing platform I like to use to connect with other Afrikaans writers. I polished a couple of stories that filled in what happened behind the scenes of the novels I've completed (and am planning to publish in the near future), incorporating as as many elements of the diverse world I created as possible to give readers a taste of what they can expect in future novels. A few of the stories tell the real story behind a folktale (like Rapunzel) while others are the history of Faerie itself.
I polished my stories in Afrikaans, submitted it and forgot about it. Then I won. From that moment on I knew it was meant to be read by as many people as possible, so I rewrote it in English and published it.

I actually enjoy running my author empire.

How many books/stories have you published so far?

The winning entry to the publishing competition that got me into indie publishing is called "Once...". Both translations are available now in print, audio and eBook editions globally.

To celebrate the release of the audiobook, the eBook of "Once..." is at a discounted price for the month of October (Amazon only).

I also have short stories in three anthologies:
“Just Deserts” and “Lights” in “Cinderella Reimagined” – both are New Adult contemporary Cinderella retellings.
“Black Moon” in “Unbound” – Valkyries and Furies fight over the souls of the recently dead.
“The Inn” in “FairyTale Riot” – an Urban Fantasy retelling of Fitcher’s Bird (this anthology will be released at the end of October).

More excitement – and stories from Faerie – will follow in 2019.

What book/story are you currently promoting or working on?

Right now, I'm quite busy promoting "Once...".
Picture

What’s the elevator pitch?

Damsels in distress, curses, echoes of faery tales and tragic love affairs swirl together in sixteen stories found in a dragon’s lair by a curious half-fae.

How long have you been working on it?

Depends... The greater part of the world-building comes from several novels, so a decade? The stories in this book only took two months to write and polish. But getting each format published? The Afrikaans version (all formats) was done by April, the English eBook and print was launched in May and the audiobook in mid-September.
So a decade and fourteen months?

When will it be available to buy? Where?

You can buy it right now!
"Once..." is available from major online retailers in print, audio and eBook.

(wait, that didn't come out right.)
